Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums voted not to acquire dolphins caught in a “drive fishery” such as at Taiji

AUSTRALIA FOR DOLPHINS brought a suit in a Geneva civil court against the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums seeking to require it to enforce its own code of ethics against inhumane capture. The parties had been ordered into 90 day settlement discussions by the Geneva Ct during which WAZA issued an ultimatum to JAZA: WAZA suspended the membership of the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums for violating the code and gave it 30 days to end connections with drive hunts, or be expelled.

As a result, the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums advised that its members had voted not to acquire dolphins caught in a “drive fishery”, such as that conducted at Taiji.

Individual Japanese member organisations this week voted 99 to 43 to stay with WAZA, according to The Japan Times.
